How “You Only Kiss Me When You’re Drunk” Came to Life — A Happy Accident Turned Western Pop Jam

Some songs come from deep emotion, heartbreak, or life’s big moments. This one? It came from a random one-liner I wrote over a year ago: “You only kiss me when you’re drunk.”

No deep meaning. No tragic love story. Just a sassy little phrase I jotted down and let sit for months. I didn’t know what to do with it until, one day on the road, inspiration finally hit. I cracked open Logic, laid down some chord progressions, and since I didn’t have my guitar with me, I used a MIDI guitar to pluck out some simple, single-note melodies.

A couple of days later, I pulled it back up, listened with fresh ears, and thought… huh. This kind of sounds like a western track.

And that’s when I decided to go full yeehaw.

I leaned all the way into the western feel—from the rhythm to the attitude—and headed to visit one of my best friends, who just so happens to be an insanely talented musician and producer (and fronts a killer band called Trash Panda). We recorded vocals in his home studio, and it was honestly a whole new world for me. He coached me through the takes, offering tips like not accenting the end of words, adding more sass, and making sure I was hitting the pitch just right.

It was exhausting, humbling, and definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone—but man, it made the biggest difference.

While I was down there, another one of his bandmates, Brando, jumped in with some advice on the drums and even laid down a quick bass run with me. The whole thing felt like a jam session with friends that accidentally turned into something bigger.

Once I got back home, I started mixing—adding new drums, tightening everything up, and putting the finishing touches on it. Watching the song evolve from a random phrase to a full-blown western pop banger has been one of the most exciting creative journeys I’ve been on.

It’s been a wild ride, but I’m so proud of this track—and even more grateful for the people who helped bring it to life. From spontaneous inspiration to studio magic, “You Only Kiss Me When You’re Drunk” is my weird little baby, and I absolutely love how it turned out.
